Základní škola Dub nad Moravou, Czech republic, was given the invitation to Virtual Eden! Our National agency for LLP, Prague, published the list of approved school projects for 2009 - 2011 and we are among them. We are looking forward to cooperate with old and new partners.

We hope to share our joint experience gained through A Slice of Bread Comenius project and learn lots of new things together and from each other.

Parents' meeting

0n 17 June 2009 Parents of children who visited our partner schools were invited to the last meeting of the project. It was an opportunity to share their experience concerning foreign students. The coordinator of the project expressed her gratitude for taking care of the guests. A mobility survey shows that the majority of foreign students like Polish food: “It was delicious, many different things.”, “I love it!”, “Very good food.”, “ …They are very good cooks. I like their food.”, “It was different. Some things I like and some things I didn’t like.”. All students enjoyed their staying with the host families: “Very friendly, really did take care of me!” “They were so nice to me!’ “They were great!”. Most students liked the programme of the visit: “The program was very good.”, “I like it so much!”, “It was a good experience to see the Polish life style.”, “It was awesome=>OK.”, “It was nice to be here”. In our guests’ eyes the Polish school: “…is like Czech school but bigger.”, “It was nice but too empty (could be because there were no students)”, “ It was different but it was nice with art on the walls.”, “I don’t like schools, but Polish school is OK.”. The English test, which was taken by the Comenius international group on the 1st June seemed to be a piece of cake. Very few students expected to fail it. In fact, all students received famous Polish sweets called “krówki”. According to the survey, all students would like to participate in the next Comenius project.

Ecology Lesson

Today we had a biology lesson but we were not in the school building. Our lesson took place in a special centre. Inhabitants of the city of Jastrzębie Zdrój are provided with fresh water which is delivered to their households from the Czech sources high in the mountains. The modern sewage farm and its Education Centre for Ecology in Jastrzębie was built with the help of the European Union fund. During the lecture which was translated for our guests by Ms. Justyna Świercz, our English teacher, we found out a lot of water circulation in the environment and a serious problem of nitrate pollution. We could see how huge modern facilities and invisible bacteria work to make dirty, polluted water clean enough for beavers to live in it.
A comic which was a gift from the Center made the lesson more memorable and funny.

VIII Ogólnopolski Tydzień Czytania Dzieciom

Mrs. Elżbieta Krajewska is a librarian in Public Municipal Library Branch No 16 which is situated in our school. This week is very special and more readers visit the library not only to borrow a book but also to listen to it. Yesterday, on June 1st, the reading campaign started. It is called "All of Poland Reads to Kids". “ABCXXI - All of Poland Reads to Kids Foundation” has prepared a very special 23-volume collection of books for children. As they say that, “If we wish to live in a country of wise, honest and cultured people, let’s ensure that reading aloud every day becomes a priority in our homes, as well as in the kindergartens and schools our children attend.”
In each library all over Poland celebrities and common people read books to kids. Our library had unusual guests and a book. The book was written by Polish, Czech and Swedish children. They handed the book down to the Librarian to be included into the huge book collection. Applying for a Comenius grant we declared that our project will help pupils develop linguistic competencies, promote intercultural awareness and prepare students for their future as adult members of the European community. This has just happened. When we came to the library with our book “The Little Red Hen”, we saw the reading room full of small kids. They came from the nearby preschool. They didn’t expect to have such extraordinary lectors. Paulina from Sweden, Radka from the Czech Republic and Eva from Poland read to them about hardworking Hen and her lazy friends. It was very easy to understand the Polish girl. They could partially understand the Czech language. But the Swedish one was a total puzzle. One five-year-old suspected that it was Chinese! Kids were so excited that after having returned to their classes they began to draw their illustrations.

NOBODY IS BORN A READER A CHILD NEEDS TO BE TAUGHT TO READ FOR PLEASURE BY BEING READ TO EVERY DAY.

STOP - A Momentous Quarter
“Remembering the Past, Shaping the Future”.
Our Comenius meeting is full of joy but there was time when everybody was silent. On our way to Krakow we stopped for a quarter at the Auschwitz concentration camp. Our teachers wanted us to be in person in that terrifying place just to become witnesses. Such a tragic place in the middle of Europe should always be remembered. We must do our best to keep peace. Three names come to our minds when we have history lessons about the Holocaust: Raul Wallenberg, a Swede, Henryk Slawik, a Pole and Jozsef Antall, a Hungarian. During the WW II they all worked in Budapest and rescued hundreds of Jews and their compatriots. Slawik and Wallenberg paid with their lives for their humanitarian actions. The three heroes were awarded the title “Righteous Among the Nations” at the Yad Vashem Institute. In Poland Slawik is sometimes called a Polish Wallenberg.

Mrs Zofia Tomeczek used to teach Art in ZSNo11. Although she retired a few years ago, she was willing to demonstrate her hobby: wycinanki. "Wycinanki" is the Polish word for paper-cut design.
More than a hundred years ago, women in small villages near Warsaw were too poor to buy paintings to decorate their timbered huts. Instead they started cutting out various, usually symmetrical, designs from a single piece of colored paper, with spruce trees and birds as the most popular motif. Some women preferred cutting-outs which consists of many layers of brightly colored paper used in its composition. Polish paper cut-outs are a very special sort of art. The unique richness of paper-cut designs done in the Polish tradition is a special contribution to the artistic heritage of the world. Nowadays small groups of women usually cut out for exhibitions and competitions or for pleasure. Mrs Tomeczek is among them as she takes part in many exhibitions and enjoys sharing her expertise with other, especially children. Mrs Angelika Augustyn, our English teacher, helped to explain to our guests if they needed.

Hello

Now am I home. But I want back I miss everybody so much, but my tears are gone, I have jousted everyone yesterday when we were saying god bye to everybody. But at the same time, I’m glad to be home I have missed my friends.
The trip home was long; the clock was over eleven when I came home. It was nice to give my mum a hug and have the chans to sleep in my owned bed.
It is fun to see what people have miss me here and that everybody ask me how it’s been.

But I think I’m going back there some time, you now they say that everyone who have heard the melody that plays in Krakow they are coming back, and after all,

It was very sad to leave our dear friends, the host families, colleagues and a nice Polish school. Time to go home...The last photo of a whole group and sad girls with tears in their eyes...While we were sitting on a train to Olomouc, our Swedish friends were going to Cracow to take the first of their three planes to get back to Sweden.

On the first day of our visit we are taking parts in a few workshops and tried new crafts. We are using special needles and scissors.
While one group is felting their pendants, another group is cutting out folk patterns. Ms. Anna Orłowska-Zyzało teaches English and Art at ZSNo11. Today she is teaching all Comenius students and teachers how to make felting pendants, beads, earring or a brooch.

W roku 2007 Zespół Szkół nr 11 w Jastrzębiu Zdroju wnioskował o grant z Unii Europejskiej w ramach programu Comenius – Uczenie się przez całe życie. W listopadzie 2007r otrzymaliśmy grant na realizację projektu „A Slice of Bread” – „Kromka chleba” we współpracy ze szkołami: Torskolan w Torsås, Szwecja oraz Základní škola w Dubu nad Moravou, Czechy. Koordynatorami projektu w swoich krajach są Caroline Elneus, Ivana Buchtova. Koordynatorem całego projektu jest szkoła polska.

Dzięki projektowi udało się wzbogacić bazę szkoły: w 2008 roku za przyznany przez Unię Europejską grant zakupiono sprzęt potrzebny do realizacji projektu: komputer, drukarkę, gilotynę, laminator, bindownicę, laptop, urządzenie wielofunkcyjne, tablicę interaktywną, kamerę video, CD player, mobilną tablicę interaktywną oraz oprogramowanie i akcesoria komputerowe. Podłączono pracownie języka angielskiego i języka polskiego do Internetu oraz zorganizowano kurs dla nauczycieli. Ponadto zakupiono materiały na stroje i dekoracje do przedstawienia „Mała czerwona kurka”, które było zaprezentowane publiczności podczas Dni Otwartych 2008 oraz z okazji uroczystości 25-lecia szkoły.

Grant został przyznany na 12 mobilności, czyli obowiązkowych wyjazdów do szkół partnerskich. Realizując zobowiązania programu Comenius, 21 uczniów i nauczycieli odwiedziło szkoły w Szwecji i Czechach. Grupa projektu pracowała nad dwoma produktami finalnymi: książką i kalendarzem. Obydwie pozycje zostały zrealizowane. W dniach 29 maja - 3 czerwca 2009 nasi partnerzy przybywali w Polsce z rewizytą. W lipcu 2009 nastąpi zakończenie projektu partnerstwa szkół „A Slice of Bread”. 20 lutego 2009 grupa powiększona o nowych partnerów złożyła kolejny wniosek o grant unijny.

W trakcie realizacji projektu grupa zaczęła prowadzić wspólny blog http://sliceofbread-torskolan.blogspot.com/ , który stał się jednocześnie formą dokumentacji projektu oraz platformą dialogu międzykulturowego. Zamieszczamy tam nie tylko informacje i komentarze, ale także prezentacje związane z lokalnymi zwyczajami i rodzimą kulturą. Tak naprawdę dialog międzykulturowy zyskuje najwięcej podczas wspólnych wypraw do miejsc ważnych dla każdego narodu, gdzie młodzież ma szansę doświadczyć tej innej kultury, a także znaleźć podobieństwa i różnice. W związku z tym w czasie ostatniej wizyty zorganizowaliśmy dwie wycieczki: jedną do Krakowa, jako kolebki kultury polskiej i miejsca dziedzictwa światowego, gdzie przewodnikami w języku angielskim byli nasi uczniowie. Druga wycieczka odbyła się w region górski – jej celem było nie tylko promowanie kultury regionalnej, ale także praca nad tematem projektu – pieczenie chleba w chacie góralskiej.

Kiedy goście przybyli do szkoły, powitaliśmy ich chlebem i solą, jak każe polska tradycja, a pierwszoklasiści ubrani w regionalne stroje zaśpiewali powitanie po angielsku. Goście ze wzruszeniem nie tylko przyglądali się, jak nasza młodzież tańczy poloneza, ale sami odebrali pierwszą lekcję tańca. Wszyscy brali udział w warsztatach artystycznych: wycinanki ludowej, filcowania a nawet tworzenia niezwykłej książki, która później została zjedzona. Odbył się także konkurs języka angielskiego, lekcja Centrum Edukacji Ekologicznej oraz różne zawody sportowe. Rodzice urządzili lunch, którego nie powstydziłaby się żadna restauracja. Dzięki współpracy z piekarniami mogliśmy urządzić smaczną wystawę, która na zakończenie została w całości skonsumowana.
Starając się o grant, zadeklarowaliśmy, że nasz finalny produkt – książka, zostanie przekazana do Biblioteki Miejskiej. Szczęśliwym zrządzeniem losu w dniu przekazania książki, filię mieszczącą się w budynku naszej szkoły, odwiedziły przedszkolaki w ramach akcji „Cała Polska czyta dzieciom”. Nasza książka o Czerwonej Kurce czytana kolejno przez Polkę, Czeszkę i Szwedkę zrobiła ogromne wrażenie na maluchach.

Do Polski przyjechało dziesięcioro uczniów z Czech i czworo ze Szwecji oraz odpowiednio cztery i dwie nauczycielki. Zasadą programu Comenius jest, że uczniowie podczas wizyt mieszkają u swoich kolegów, aby jak najlepiej poznać realia życia codziennego odwiedzanego kraju. Wszystkim uczestnikom pozostaną w pamięci wspólnie przeżyte radosne spotkania, nowe doświadczenia, a udoskonalone umiejętności językowe wykorzystane zostaną w pogłębianiu zawartych przyjaźni.

Tematyka projektu Comenius realizowanego przez Zespół Szkół Nr 11 obejmuje trzy główne dziedziny: dialog międzykulturowy, języki obce oraz technologie informacyjno-komunikacyjne. Projekt został zatytułowany „Kromka chleba” i chleb jest przewodnią myślą naszej współpracy zagranicznej, ale celem szczegółowym jest wspieranie nauki języków obcych.

So far Polish children have started school at the age of seven. The new legislation would lower the school age from 7 to 6. Lowering the school age is seen as key to raising the educational standards of Polish children. Only one teacher is responsible for all subjects in the first grade of instruction, with the exception of foreign language teaching and religion education. In our school Ms Maria Pacan is a form tutor of grade 1B. Ms Angelika Augustyn is an English teacher. Learning English is obligatory since the beginning of primary school. On 22 May Ms Augustyn invited other primary English teachers in Jastrzębie Zdrój to come and see her lesson while she was using up-to-date equipment. The children sang songs, spelled their names and watched a comic on the interactive board. All children wanted to do exercises using an unusual mouse. If our school hadn't been given the Comenius grant, we wouldn't have the mobile interactive board.

Folklore performance in Olomouc

On Thursday April 30th, fourth and fifth forms from Dub school visited a performance of Children Folkore Ensemble DUNAJEČEK in Olomouc. It is not easy to meet and watch real folklore performance nowadays, moreover with dances and songs performed by kids! Teachers were a bit afraid how students would response to their very first opportunity to meet folklore but this cultural event was a big success. Children not only became familiar with music, songs, dances or old folk traditions, but also were allowed to try playing musical instruments unknown to them like a double-bass and cimbalom. The next they at school they asked about visiting a similar event again!

Football and athletics in Dub nad Moravou

In April and May, our school football teams took part at two regional football competitions called Coca - cola Cup and Mc Donald´s Cup. Both younger and older footballers finished on the second place with three matches won and only one lost. You can see in the photos that a team of younger students has also one girl - player and Martina is really proud to be a team member!

At the athletics championship of our region, mainly the runners were very succesfull. Despite of the fact that our school does not have special conditions for athletics, our students regularly gain very good results at regional competitions.

African dance and music

Rehearsal - Little Red Hen

These pictures are taken when we are practise on the little red hen theatre. I am Paulina and I am playing the baker in the show. I am fourteen years old and go my seventh year in school. We are going to show the theatre for the children that are five years old and next school year they are going to begin school. When we didn’t find the right costumes for the theatre, we had to write it different, the cat become a rabbit and the pig become a frog, that my best friend play. We are just girls in the play that are acting and we are all from the same class. We are nine girls in our class and it is eight of us that are playing in the theatre.
It is very fun to play theatre and it is fun to just hang out together. The teachers have helped us very much, they have given us time to practise and also a little room in the basement where we can practise alone.We are also going to try starting a conversation with the children so they also can be a part of this project.

3rd May in a Polish town

Yesterday we went on a trip to Nysa . Nysa is a beautiful town in the south of Poland. Jastrzębie Zdrój is a big modern town. It is much bigger than Nysa but, to tell the truth, Nysa is much more interesting and beautiful.

Gimnazjum Exam

After three years in gimnazjum - junior high school - we are sitting our first examination. Yesterday it was a Polish and History test, today we are writing a Mathematics and Physics test, tomorrow - an English one. It is the first time when a foreign language is examined in Polish school.

THE SPRING IS HERE

It is spring and there is flowers on the ground and the sun shines almost every day and you can skip your big, warm jacket and maybe some days dress your self in just shorts or skirt. When you go out you can feel the wind in your hair and it smells, it smells spring.
We have just celebrate the Easter.
It is wonderful to wake up in the morning and hear the birds when they sing there´s lovely song. To look at your arm and see how the sun caresses the skin, and how you after a time have a nice brown skin colour.
The spring is fantastic, it is not boring like autumn. You can go outside without thinking so much if you gonna freeze. But spring is only the beginning, wait until the summer comes

A Night with Andersen 2009 in Dub nad Moravou

Students from 5th form sleept at school on Friday , April 3rd 2009. It was A Night with Andersen in our school again! For weeks they were getting ready for presenting their favourite books to their classmates. There also was a competition and lots of games prepared for children. Everyone was looking forward to this event and students really enjoyed it. What about you? What is your favourite book? Do you like sleeping at school? What do you know about Hans Christian Andersen?

Do you like spring and Easter? Do you like Easter traditions and creative work? If yes, you would like the first Easter fair in Dub nad Moravou, Saturday 4th April 2009. We prepared lots of interesting things and activities. There were various craftmen showing their skills - blacksmiths, basket makers, florists, gingerbread makers...........Visitors could try their own skills at Art and Craft workshops.Many of them made some Easter decorations of paper, sweetgrass, iron wires or painted their own T - shirt.
For hungry visitors barbecued sausages, pancakes and some drinks were prepared.
At 11 o ´clock an exhibition of students paintings was opened in the church crypt and the school choir performed their new spring programme. At 14:30, organ and brass concert in the church started.
We were happy that people in Dub helped us to create a new tradition in our village and we all look forward to preparing the second Easter fair next year!

That was a rainy afternoon and I was going home from school. It was a hard day. I was hungry and tired after the whole day at school.
I was going to the bust stop. Out of blue a girl appeared in front of me. She was very strange. She had torn clothes and was bleeding.
‘Don’t get on this bus or you will die!’ she shouted. I was a bit scared but this girl disappeared. I missed the bus because of her and I had to walk home.
When I came back home my mum was crying and she hugged me vary hard. I didn’t know what is happening. My mum pointed to the TV. I saw on TV that my school bus had an accident and everybody died. I was shocked. Suddenly I saw the face of the girl who stopped me after school. She died in the accident, too. I couldn’t believe my eyes!
That night I couldn’t sleep. I knew she saved my life. Since that day I believe in ghosts!

The Czech National Agency invites you to send a Postcard to Comenius! The collection and exhibition
of postcards from all over Europe will be part of the Comenius Week 2009.
The European programme for school education was named after the Czech teacher, scientist, educator, bishop of the Unity of Brethren and writer Jan Amos Komenský (John Amos Comenius 1592-1670). He became known as the teacher of nations and is often considered the father of modern education. 28 March, his birthday, is celebrated as Teachers' Day in the Czech Republic.
Comenius suggested that the school experience should be as pleasant as possible and that teachers make use of play in teaching children. Let's play together and be creative!
Please send your postcard to Comenius with a short message about your Comenius/eTwinning project experience to the Czech National Agency. What do you like about European school projects? What did you learn about your partner countries? Have you found new friends? Has something changed in your school life?
Please write in your mother tongue and/or in English. Don't forget to add your full school address (including your country).
Design your postcard yourselves. You can draw a picture or use a photo; you can use the computer or make a collage. Think of the best way to illustrate your message.
What will happen with your postcard? All postcards will be presented in an exhibition during a
conference on the Lifelong Learning Programme in Prague on 6-7 May 2009. The most creative ones will be presented on the Internet or used for future publications on Comenius and eTwinning activities.
