This exhibition was organized by a local senior club. For the first time they prepared also a competition in baking bunt cakes ( bábovka in Czech ). It is a very popular cake here and the exhibition room was full of wonderful scent when we visited it! Czech students like helping with baking typical Christmas pastry which is gingerbread. The shapes are usually decorated with white icing and often hang on the Christmas tree.
Gingerbread can be used also for making a beautiful candlestick, like this one.
The 5th December is a very popular day in the Czech Republic - St. Nicholas´s day! All the children wait impatiently for the evening when St. Nicholas accompanied with a group of devils and a nice angel come to their homes. Every year these popular creatures visit also our school and go to lower classes to ask children whether they were good or naughty. St. Nicholas has a magic book with notes about each child. Devils like to frighten the kids and these two ones were really terrible! Some of the boys were nearly taken to the hell in devils´bags! Good children always get some sweets from an angel´s basket.
On Wednesday December 3rd 2008, about ten brave students from grades 6 to 9 participated in a rhetoric competition called Young Demosthenes. It looks easy but not every-one is brave enough to speak for two minutes in front of their school mates audience! The winners are going to take part in a regional level of this popular competition. We wish them to enjoy it and gain lots of new rhetoric experience! Last preparation before the speech. Majority of competitors were girls, only two boys took part!
Zbyněk Rychlý was a winner in a category of 8th and 9th graders. He was talking about the danger of plastic products for nature and human health. Lenka Janošíková was a winner in a category of 6th and 7th graders. She was talking about Czech language, communication technologies and possible replacing of Czech language with English.
